You've made all the arrangements and you're ready and wanting to go on the adventure you've been planning for. One thing none of us want to happen is an unexpected breakdown. Getting stuck on the side of the road is a misfortune that can happen to anyone, at any time, for a number of different reasons. If you aren’t prepared for such an event, roadside assistance can be an invaluable resource. While you are waiting to be rescued, there are some safety factors to consider that will help keep you and other motorists safe. Here are the 3 safest places to wait for roadside assistance:
On The Right Shoulder of the Road
Almost every major highway and bi way have a section of roadway designated for drivers to pull over and park their vehicle during an emergency. If you happen to find yourself stranded on the road and can still accelerate your car, it is highly recommended that you maneuver it toward the right shoulder of the road. This allows you to stay clear of any oncoming traffic before calling for roadside assistance or a tow truck. If you happen to be blocking the road, it proves to be dangerous for you and other drivers as well. Some drivers may be able to dodge your vehicle quickly, but others may not be able to think or move that fast. This increases your probability of being struck by other motorists and ending up with more injuries or damages. That’s why you should find the quickest access to the right shoulder of the road, and park your vehicle until the cavalry comes to save the day.
Inside the Car
It is not only wise but safest to wait for roadside assistance inside of your vehicle. Staying inside your car is particularly necessary if you are stranded on the road at nighttime, during a storm or rain, or in an unsafe, deserted location. Keep the car’s doors locked and don’t pace around your vehicle as it can draw attention from people, particularly burglars who can take advantage of you and your situation. Unless your car engine is smoking or has overheated, it is highly recommended that you stay inside the car and keep your seatbelt on while you wait for help to arrive. Engage your hazards if possible and turn on interior lights if you are able. Your car is more visible than you are, so staying inside it will help protect you and hopefully prevent any further damage.
Away from the Traffic
If you have a breakdown on a busy highway and you think that it's safe to get out of your vehicle, then go with your instincts and exit through the passenger door so that you are farthest away from traffic. Be very careful and look both ways before you ever start walking towards the road, even if you are off it. If possible, wear bright-colored clothing so that you are clearly visible to the oncoming traffic while getting out of your car. Getting stranded on the road can be a very frustrating experience and calling roadside assistance is the smartest thing to do in such situations. While you are waiting for the help to arrive, you want to make sure that you are safe. So, always stay awake and alert, always keeping an eye on your surroundings.
